The Power of

Certified seed is the foundation of a productive and sustainable agricultural system. Certified seed is seed of a known variety produced under strict seed certification standards to maintain varietal purity. Seed lots must also meet specified standards for other crops, inert matter, weed seeds, and germination. Certified seed is also free of prohibited noxious weed seeds. All certified seed must pass field inspection, be conditioned by an approved seed conditioning plant, and then be sampled and pass laboratory testing before it can be sold as certified seed.

All inspectors analyze at each field in the program against AOSCA and state agency standards. Items that are checked include, but not limited to: Isolation, Field History, Off Types, and Field Standards. An inspection report containing this information is issued for each field prior to harvest.
The highest quality standards in the seed industry is certified seed. Certified seed can be identified with a white, purple, or blue tag. When you see a certified tag on a bag of seed, it guarantees that:
Certification preserves the identity and purity of newly developed varieties as they move from breeder seed through commercial production.
Certified seed programs help maintain proper variety use, licensing compliance, and stewardship of breeder-developed genetics. In the US breeders are able to elect to use the certification system, and most often utilize Plant Variety Protections. This allows the certification agency to assist with royalty collection which puts money back in breeding programs all over the US.
AOSCA Member agencies assist in royalty collection totaling over 10 million dollars annually, putting money back into breeding programs to support future innovation.
When varieties are sold as certified seed, breeders gain credibility and trust with growers and the broader agricultural industry.
Reliable certification helps ensure new varieties perform as intended, encouraging faster and broader market acceptance.
– A Breeder’s Perspective –
The superior genetics and purity of certified seed lead to stronger plants and better crop performance, resulting in increased profits.
Certified seed minimizes the need for additional treatments, such as pest and disease control, ultimately saving farmers money in the long run.
With certified seed, farmers can rely on uniform growth, maturity, and harvest timing, reducing variability and enhancing marketability.
When you are in the market for seed you are making a big decision where so many factors are not in your control. However, when you choose a variety that has been grown through a certification program and tagged with a blue tag you do have assurances for seed quality such as germination and purity. Compounding those attributes, all varieties prior to being grown in a certification program have been through a peer-reviewed system of varietal eligibility. This process ensures a distinct, uniform, and stable variety.

– A Grower’s Testimonial –
Certified seed helps ensure reliable food, feed, turf, and forage products through uniform and dependable crop production.
Certification provides a documented chain of custody, offering assurance about how and where seed was produced.
By minimizing weed seed, off-types, and replanting needs, certified seed supports more sustainable agricultural practices. Start clean, end clean. Less inputs means more money in your pocket.
From farmers to processors to end consumers, certification strengthens trust in the agricultural system. Certification is required in most countries proving that the attention to detail in the certification system is respected and necessary to the food system.
